The 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster, which has arrived in Canada, makes sure you're in plain view of the crowds that might gather around the car. And at roughly $485,000, know that crossing paths with another Roadster won't be an event that will repeat itself too often.
Recently presented at the Lamborghini Montreal dealership, part of the John Scotti Group, the top-optional Aventador was cloaked in Azzuro Thetis metallic blue paint, a new colour that the company says pays homage to the 1968 Miura Roadster.
The car's detachable roof is a two-piece affair, and each half weighs only 13 lbs. (or 6 kg) thanks to the use of high-pressure resin transfer moulding; the panels can be neatly stored in the trunk. The Roadster's structure had to be reinforced due to the lack of a fixed roof, which added 110 lbs. to the car's overall weight. The chassis, by the way, is made from carbon fibre on which aluminum frames are bolted to integrate the powertrain and the axles.
Those weight-saving efforts pay off, as the Lambo is slightly lighter than the Ferrari F12berlinetta and noticeably lighter than the Aston Martin Vanquish – despite the ability to remove the top and an all-wheel drivetrain, which its rivals don't have.
Combine that with the mid-mounted 6.5L V12 and seven-speed, automated double-clutch gearbox, which develops 700 metric horsepower – or 691 US hp – as well as 507 lb-ft of torque, and you get a supercar that can blast from 0 to 100 km/h in a claimed three seconds flat. In addition, the Lambo Roadster can top out at 350 km/h, although at that clip, your hairline will likely recede more quickly than the points on your driver's license.
Oh yeah, the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP 700-4 Roadster also includes a (cough) environmentally-friendly and fuel-saving cylinder-deactivation system, which shuts off a row of cylinders under light loads, and an automatic start/stop system.
Obviously, the Roadster buyer gets the pleasure of dressing up the cabin any way he or her heart desires. Leather or embossed leather upholstery, seat stitching colour, suede or perforated leather steering wheel trim; the Italian company will handcraft it for you, as long as you keep dishing out the greenbacks.
As fast as the Roadster is, though, it can also be enjoyed at more relaxed speeds. Say, during Saturday-night cruises downtown or during sunny summer days by the countryside, since the top can be quickly and easily removed. That's quite an impressive half-million tanning booth for two.
