Volkswagen unveils the new Golf R

Volkswagen is preparing to launch on the North American market the seventh generation of the popular Volkswagen Golf. The German manufacturer has already introduced the new Golf GTD, Golf GLI and Golf TDI in recent months, but saved the best for last: the unveiling of the new Golf R.

If it is the Volkswagen GLI that is seen most often on the road because of its affordable price and superior user-friendliness, it remains that it is the Golf R that sits atop the Golf range since its introduction in 2002 when it was known as the R32.

The new Golf R will debut at the next Frankfurt Auto Show which is set to get underway in a few weeks. According to preliminary information released by Volkswagen, the R will be powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine which delivers 296 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

As in previous generations of the Golf R, this power is sent to all four wheels through a Haldex 4Motion permanent AWD system. In Europe, consumers can choose between a 6-speed manual gearbox or a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission. Volkswagen has not revealed which transmissions would be available to Canadian buyers.

According to the German manufacturer, the new Golf R will be able to reach 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds with the DSG transmission and 5.1 seconds with the manual. Expect to see the arrival to the new Golf R somewhere in 2014, but the exact launch date has not been announced.
