Volkswagen to electrify for Frankfurt with e-Golf and e-up! models

The popularity of electric cars is on the rise. While in the past, EVs were looked upon as an unlikely replacement for combustion-engined vehicles, more and more manufacturers are now turning towards this green technology.

Electric vehicles are gaining in popularity because their driving range is rising, charge times are coming down, and they are becoming more and more affordable.

Now, the company that is known for making "The People's Car" is getting into this segment, too.

At next month's Frankfurt auto show, Volkswagen will introduce the e-Golf and the e-up!. Both these vehicles are purely electric (not plug-in hybrids) and offer impressive features.

The electric motor in the Volkswagen e-Golf is capable of producing 113 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. VW says the e-Golf can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 10.4 seconds, and has a range of 190 km on a full charge.

The electrified Volkswagen e-up! produces 80 hp and 155 lb-ft of torque, can sprint to 100 km/h from rest in 12.4 seconds and has a range of 150 km. The e-up!, which has been released prior to the show, can be charged up to 80 percent within 30 minutes.

While VW has not released any pricing, they did say that the ordering books will open for both models before the end of the year.
