Before, GM used the weight of the vehicle after removing certain elements such as the center console and bumpers, among others. This had the effect of increasing the maximum payload capacity of its mid- and full-size trucks.
This practice is also used by Ford who admitted that it removed the weight of the spare tire, the audio system and center console when calculating the payload rating of its Super Duty lineup. For their part, Ram, Nissan, and Toyota have said they use base curb weights when calculating payload.
Payload capacity dictates the total weight that a model is able to accommodate. It goes without saying that by removing some elements, the ratings are increased. General Motors said that payload based on base curb weights would be used on 2015 models of the Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado 1500, as well as GMC Sierra 1500 and Canyon models.
The maximum payload capacity offered by GM’s HD lineup will also be adjusted to reflect their actual payload specs based on the new calculation.
On the other hand, a representative from Ford told American publication Automotive News that the manufacturer does not intend to review the way it calculates maximum payload.
