2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray: Genuinely exotic

My advanced age, as far as I can tell, usually makes me impervious to the Corvette's strong appeal. The latest generations, while positively sporty and powerful, didn't really quench my thirst for a no-compromise American sports car.

But here comes the new 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, a racy, exotic-looking beast with Italian flair that immediately stole my heart after taking all the major auto shows by storm last year. I'm in love.

First of all, this hot new silhouette is undoubtedly the most dramatic is the history of the legendary nameplate, which dates back to 1953, by the way. There have been some spectacular lines over the years (the original Corvettes were particularly attractive), but never as bold and powerful as the current Stingray's.

Designed with purpose, and sporting sharply styled headlights and taillights, along with a perfectly sorted rear end that integrates quadruple tailpipes, the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray makes a loud and clear supercar statement. You want a real head-turner? This is it, folks.

True story: My experience behind the wheel of the new Corvette coincided with the Canadian Grand Prix back in early June. My wife and I had been invited to attend one of the many glamourous events that took place in downtown Montreal during the weekend. We arrived at the hotel dressed to the nines and driving a snazzy Velocity Yellow Corvette whose Targa-style top I had previously removed.

In no time we were swarmed by paparazzi and autograph seekers, blinded by the flashes of cameras. They soon turned away after realizing we were no celebrities — just an ordinary couple in an extraordinary car.

That's how attractive the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is.

Blissfully, the cockpit matches the racy exterior with flawless ergonomics and exceptionally supportive seats (both for larger drivers like myself and beautiful, tall passengers like my better half).

The Stingray is pretty impressive in terms of kit, as well, offering a high-quality sound system, a slick touchscreen with navigation, and programmable head-up display. That last feature proves quite useful when you don't want to take your eyes off the road.

Under the hood

Of course, the heart and soul of this new Corvette is a phenomenal small-block V8 engine that displaces 6.2 litres and cranks out a thundering 460 horsepower.

The 7-speed manual transmission is a bit of a handful, though. The first few gears are close to each other and easy to play with, but things get a tad more difficult when you need to summon the last two. Here, the shifter requires precision in order to avoid mix-ups with the fifth gear slot.

It's a minor irritant, really, especially since the main (and only?) purpose of that seventh gear is to lower engine revs and improve fuel economy on the highway. Acceleration is electrifying (0-100 km/h in roughly four seconds), while the oversized disc brakes brush off speed in safe, convincing fashion.

The Corvette's steering is exceptionally spot-on and responsive, allowing you to know exactly what the front wheels are up to at any given time and never providing too much assistance. Meanwhile, the available electronic limited-slip differential improves stability and agility in corners with precise torque vectoring.

The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray won't back down from a fight with traditional contenders like the Porsche 911 and Audi RS5. It's clearly special, sophisticated, and safe as expected. Plus, with a starting price of under $60,000, it's the bargain of the year in the supercar segment.
