The new Honda Fit Hybrid will be the first car from Honda to feature the new i-DCD transmission (SPORT HYBRID Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive) with a built-in 22 kWh electric motor. This transmission is capable of fully disconnecting the integrated electric motor from the 1.5 liter four-cylinder Atkinson-cycle gas engine. In addition, the Fit Hybrid will be equipped with a new electric servo brake that will help with energy regeneration as well as a new electric compressor that should reduce engine load. According to Honda, the new system improves fuel economy by approximately 35% compared to the manufacturer's current IMA assist hybrid system.
The i-DCD system offers three driving modes - electric only (EV), hybrid or engine only - which are activated by connecting or disconnecting the gas engine and electric motor. Unlike the vast majority of hybrid vehicles currently on the market, the i-DCD transmission is not a CVT but rather a dual clutch transmission with seven gears.
Preliminary tests on the new Honda Fit Hybrid suggest impressive fuel economy. Indeed, the car achieved an economy of 2.73 l/100 km on the Japanese cycle, which makes the Fit the most fuel-efficient hybrid car in Japan. In addition, it will be able to travel a little over 3.0 kilometers using only the electric motor.
