Audi Sport quattro concept marks 30th anniversary of original classic coupe

It was back in 1983 when Audi presented the original Sport quattro coupe to the world at the Frankfurt Auto Show. Now, 30 years later, the Sport quattro is back – albeit in concept form.

Featuring an electric motor that produces 150 hp, coupled with a twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 that produces 560 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, the Audi Sport quattro concept is certainly a performance-minded hybrid.

The net result according to Audi is a 700-hp coupe that can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 305 km/h. Yet it can travel up to 50 km on electric power alone.

The Audi Sport quattro concept does not use a dual-clutch transmission, opting instead for an eight-speed automatic. However, due to its hybrid powertrain and the heavy battery packs that are necessary for it, the Sport quattro concept tips the scales at 1,850 kg (4,079 lbs.).

Audi had shown a Sport quattro concept at the 2010 Paris Auto Show, but nothing came of it. Audi hasn’t yet commented regarding the production feasibility of this new concept, but it will no doubt be the main attraction for their booth at the 2013 IAA Frankfurt Auto Show next week. We’ll be there live, bringing you the latest news reports from one of the largest auto shows in the world.
