General Motors announced that the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 breezed through the Nordschleife, or North Loop, at 7:38.40. The Nordschleife is a closed toll road spanning 20 kilometres that has often been considered the most demanding and dangerous portion of the Nürburgring.
It is also the preferred circuit of auto manufacturers for evaluating just how fast their high-performance cars are, and then use the numbers as ammunition in the eternal game of comparisons. In this regard, the time set by the Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 puts it ahead of several powerful machines, often much more expensive, like the Porsche 911 Carrera S, the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera, the Mercedes-Benz SLR and the Ferrari F430 Scuderia. Not bad for a car that will certainly be sold for considerably less than $100,000.
The 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is powered by a 7.0-litre V8 engine developing 505 horsepower. It is less powerful than the ZL1, but Chevrolet says the Z/28 is 300 pounds lighter than the latter. The Camaro ZL1 was clocked at 7:41.27 on the same circuit, almost three tenths of a second slower than the Z/28.
By all accounts, the race for the best price-to-performance ratio continues among U.S. manufacturers and it’s the consumer that is looking for the most bang for his or her buck that will ultimately benefit.
