Volvo evaluates the potential of wireless charging stations

Swedish manufacturer Volvo in partnership with several companies recently completed a study on the potential and performance of wireless electric charging stations. The study also sought to determine whether this type of charging solution was safe for the user.

With a wireless charging station, the driver only has to position his or her electric car over the station to begin the process of recharging the batteries. An induction coil within the station creates an electromagnetic field while another coil, located in the vehicle, converts the field into electrical power for the battery.

This type of technology is already used on wireless devices such as electric toothbrushes, but it is in its infancy when it comes to car. Nevertheless, the potential of this type of charging is not to be ignored. For example, Volvo managed to recharge the batteries of an electric C30 in just 2 hours 30 minutes. This is a significant improvement compared to the current average time required to recharge an electric car.

According to Volvo, the ability to recharge the batteries more quickly could greatly increase the attractiveness of electric vehicles in the eyes of consumers.

In addition, this type of charging stations has already proven its effectiveness in recharging buses. For example, in Turin, Italy, buses have been using wireless charging stations positioned along their routes for 10 years now.
