Kia Soul to get electrified

Korean car firm Kia has just announced that an all-electric version of the second generation Kia Soul model will be available from the second half of 2014.

While it might not be the first all-electric vehicle produced by the company – that distinction belongs to the Kia Ray EV, but the Soul EV will be the first all-electric Kia vehicle offered outside of Korea.

Powered by a 81.4 kW electric motor, which drives the front wheels, the Kia Soul EV can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in about 12 seconds, and onto a top speed of 145 km/h. More importantly, its 27 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery pack will allow you to cover roughly 200 km on a full charge. That range would give it an advantage over its current rivals from Nissan and Mitsubishi.

According to Kia, the Soul EV would take five hours to go from full depletion to fully charged, when using a 240v household outlet. A fast charge system is also currently in development, which should cut the charge time down to just 25 minutes.

Kia is currently testing the Soul EV in Korea, Europe and North America. Kia is serious about selling this model globally, and that may include Canada also.
