The latest information on the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf

Volkswagen surprised a lot of people when it unveiled the 2015 e-Golf at the Frankfurt Auto Show last month. This week, the German manufacturer released a bit more information on the brand new electrified Golf.

The Volkswagen e-Golf is based on the new Golf VII, the seventh generation of the popular compact hatchback. Only available in 5-door trim, the 2015 e-Golf looks just like the gasoline or diesel powered models of the Golf family with the exception of a few unique badges and different looking wheels.

Obviously, it's under the hood that the most significant changes are noticeable. The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf 2015 is not a hybrid or plug-in hybrid model; it is a pure electric car. Its engine is powered by a 24.2 kWh lithium-ion battery which requires 4 hours to fully charge using a 220V outlet and 20 hours with a 110V outlet.

According to Volkswagen, the electric motor delivers 115 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque. With a fully charged battery, the e-Golf can travel between 112 and 144 kilometers (70 to 90 miles). It can reach 60 mph in 10.4 seconds and its top speed is 140 km/h. Although at this speed, the range of the car will be greatly reduced.

At first glance, the e-Golf does not offer anything that is very different from other electric cars currently on the market. Volkswagen will unveil the car on North American soil next week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and there is no doubt that the reaction of the crowd will dictate the future of the car on our continent.
