Kia surprises everyone in Detroit with the GT4 Stinger concept

Kia is not usually a name associated with sport coupes. That may explain why it was so surprising to see the Korean manufacturer unveil the GT4 Stinger concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

The Kia GT4 Stinger measures only 4.3 meters in length while its roof barely reaches the navel of a normal person. Kia’s stylists have incorporated subtle retro touches to the overall style of the GT4 Stinger, like the wheels for example that seem to have come from a 90s-era concept. When seen as a whole, the GT4 Stinger vaguely reminds us of the old Lotus Europa sold between 1966 and 1975.

The front headlights are comprised of two vertical rows of LED lights. These remind us that we are dealing with a modern concept.

That being said, it is with the engine found under the hood that the Kia GT4 Stinger establishes its reputation as a genuine sports car. It is powered by a four-cylinder turbocharged 2.0 liter engine which delivers a whopping 315 horsepower. This power is sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. Weighing in at a featherweight-like 1303 kg, there is no doubt that Kia GT4 Stinger would be able to deliver a high level of performance if it should ever be put into production.

So, will we one day see the Kia GT4 Stinger on our roads? At the moment, the answer from Kia is no. However, there is a good chance that we will see several technical and visual elements of the GT4 Stinger incorporated into future Kia models.
