Nissan initiates important recall

Japanese manufacturer Nissan announced yesterday a major recall involving more than a million vehicles due to an airbag problem caused by faulty software.

Nissan estimates that about 60,000 models could be affected by this recall in Canada. In the United States, the number of affected vehicles has so far reached 989,701, but as we saw during the recent recall initiated by General Motors, this number could very well increase in the coming weeks.

According to Nissan, faulty software may not detect a passenger seated in the right front seat and thus not deploy the airbags in the event of a collision. The recall affects 2013 and 2014 models of the the Nissan Altima, Sentra and Leaf, as well as the Nissan Pathfinder SUV and Infiniti JX35 and Q50 models.

There have been two reported cases involving a collision where the airbags failed to deploy. Nissan also indicated having received several complaints in connection with this problem.

The recall will begin in mid-April. Owners affected by this recall will be invited to visit their Nissan dealership in order to fix the software glitch.
